The Vanderbilt Aid Society first met, as the Ladies Aid Society for Students of Vanderbilt University, on Feb. 27, 1894. Chancellor James Kirkland had proposed a women's auxiliary to help raise funds for worthy students who could not otherwise remain enrolled in the university. The name was changed in 1900.
